Muri New Build, Pukerua Bay

Build 2.0 completed this architecturally designed new build in Pukerua Bay, Wellington. Positioned high above the Kāpiti Coast, the home was carefully designed to take advantage of sweeping coastal and rural views. The project showcases thoughtful design and seamless collaboration. Build 2.0 is commitment to high-quality construction.

The home is designed around four interlinked quadrants: living, sleeping, garage and a self-contained studio, all connected by a central corridor. At either end of this corridor, large picture-frame windows create a gallery-like feel and capture the surrounding rural views. The main living and sleeping areas are elevated to the second floor to maximise natural light and make the most of the outlook.

Hamish from ETAL Architects was an absolute pleasure to work with. His process was clear from the beginning, and he welcomed ideas and collaboration throughout. He also introduced us to BimX and VR tools, which made it much easier to visualise the design and flow of the spaces before the build started. That upfront clarity meant fewer surprises and a much smoother construction process.

Wellington Construction

Structurally, this build was all about balance between strength, form and performance. The exposed steel portal frame in the main living area is one of my favourite features. It adds a bold, industrial feel while supporting the open-plan layout. Extra bracing was also factored in to handle the Wellington wind, and we used NZ-made Abodo timber paired with bagged brick cladding for a warm, durable and low-maintenance exterior. The Abodo fins on the deck look fantastic and were a pleasure to work with.

The home was built during the height of Covid, which brought the usual challenges around supply and logistics. But with clear planning and by making decisions early, we were able to avoid major delays, even while working with bespoke rather than off-the-shelf materials.
